Preparing for victory…

The first week of play-offs has come to an end, and so have the hopes and dreams of many teams who found themselves on the losing end of competition this week.  With next week determining the winners of this season’s intramural basketball season, it will be a long weekend for the contending teams.  Greg and I took some great pictures and videos this week, so be sure to check them out here on the website.  We’ll have our final POWERADE sampling of the season next week, so stop by and try one of our delicious five flavors!  Good luck to those teams prepping for a victory this upcoming week, and congratulations to all teams for a great season.  It’s been fun to watch! Have a great weekend!

GO HAWKS!

BALLS TO THE WALL AND PANTS ON THE GROUND AT USF

It comes down to one night to decide it all here at USF and I will be the first to admit that I did not see this coming.  Of course I knew that tonight was championship night a long time ago, but those dedicated few that followed the playoff preview may be egging my bike right now.  I was wrong, completely wrong with how things would go.  Well not completely wrong as the foreseen Whoop Squad vs. Pursuers final is now official.

It was said the other day that USF has had its own March Madness tournament complete with upsets, buzzer beaters and plenty of mercy rules!  Instead of dwelling on the past and how wrong I was, (come on who knew Next Level would use 5 guys for the first time all year, beat Undisputed, then have only 3 show for the next game?) let’s move on to tonight and a look at the three championship games taking place.  Special guest Booby Jones will be providing commentary as well.

We will start in order of occurrence and thus we begin with Co-Rec.  The matchup is between top-seeded ATSA and a sleeper pick, The Beats.  ATSA brought out the full squad last night and handled Domestic Violence easily.  It was as if Domestic Violence owed ATSA money and ATSA was convinced that they would beat DV to a pulp until each and every penny was milked out of them.  Or for those who don’t understand ridiculous analogies ATSA won 71-52.

The Beasts powered past Whoop Squad Co-Rec to the sound of 67-60.  All signs point to ATSA coming out victorious but you have to be weary of the underdog as the upset has been the norm this tournament.  BetBMoney.com has ATSA as -8.5 point favorites heading into tonight and I like them pulling this one out.  The over/under for the game sits at 138.   Look for the duo of Chris “The One Gloved Bandit” Robinson and Bobby “I’m Not Whitney’s Husband” Brown to take over and bring the ship back to the Athletic building.  Don’t be surprised if a pre-game pep talk by “Dr.” Lou Holtz, who is in town to give pep talks to anyone who will listen (kind of like the preachers in front of subway) makes the difference in this one.

Moving on to the Women’s game at 9pm we see the top two seeds do battle in a re-match of a game Whoop Squad won easily earlier in the year.    I don’t know what to make of the Pursuers 45-25 win over ADPI last night, but I do know that Whoop Squad will be bringing the hurt after slowly but painfully dismantling the defending champs Lady Murkaz.  Tempers should be flaring in this one as both teams wear red and the Pursuers have already tried to “claim” red as their color for tonight.

The color of the shirts won’t matter in this one, only the names on the back of them as Whoop Squad should be able to put this one away wearing their warm ups.  The current spread according to Booby and BetBMoney.com has the over/under at 100  and Whoop Squad at -12.  The Pursuers can practice all they want and draw up fancy inbounds plays, but at the end of the day “The Big Three” of Whoop Squad is too much too handle.

Finally we come across the biggest game of the night between steady top-seed Lake Mag and the Cinderella of the tournament Gamecocks.  Lake Mag has advanced through the tournament stringing together win after win by wearing down their opponents with steady, consistent scoring.  The Gamecocks have become a pop culture phenom after burying DO WORK and following it up by taking Gameover to the cleaners.

We will see a contrast in styles of play as Lake Mag will use it’s steady half-court offense to slow down the run ‘n gun Gamecocks fast break style of play.  We will see the battle of the big men between Lake Mag’s Mike “White” Rice and the Gamecocks Nnaemeka “I’m Gonna Destroy You” Umeh.  While this may be the matchup to watch, there is no doubt the guard play will be the difference.  Mark “Team” Wise of Lake Mag will run the point against the Evan “Villain” Turner of the tournament, Lamound “The Kid Phenom” Mcgibboney.  The Phenom has single-handedly dominated the tournament and brought a massive fan base to every game.

Before we make the pick, let’s look at the odds according to BetBMoney.com has Gamecocks -14.5 point favorites.  The majority of the betting public has Gamecocks covering the spread.  The over/under will be at 112.  The pick is going to be the Gamecocks as they are the best team with the best player in the league.  Look for “The Kid Phenom” to bring home the championship and the MVP to the Gamecocks in front of a packed house.

Check back tomorrow for a championship recap and as always GOOOO BULLSSSS!!!!

Biggest Intramural Event of the Year!

Today is the Intramural Basketball Championship here at St. John’s. A year ago from today I went to the Intramural championship game with my roomates and thats the first time I ever saw POWERADE intramurals. I didn’t even participate in Intramural Basketball back then, I was just an onlooker. One of the campus Reps gave me a free towel and I was like “Cool, free stuff!” lol. That event interested me in applying for the Internship over the summer. Now this year I’m a Campus Rep for St. John’s University, and maybe I’ll be handing some free stuff to next years Campus Reps.
Everybody come to Taffner tonight from 5-11pm and encourage your friends to come with you. The night will start off with a Skills Challenge, then the All-Star Game and end with the Intramural Basketball Championship Game. We have a lot of great talent here at St. John’s University, trust me I’ve experienced it first hand (Thank You Mercy Rule), so there will be some exciting moments and great entertainment. And last but not least, Free POWERADE for everyone and other free products from POWERADE Intramurals. So don’t be shy come to the biggest Intramural event at St. John’s all year and make sure you stop by the POWERADE sampling table for some free, great tasting POWERADE ION 4!

End of Season

It is sad to say but the end of the University of Southern Mississippi’s intramural basketball season has ended! Congrats to all of the champions for the different divisions. Also good games to all of those who came out and participated in the intramural program and were able to be sponsored by POWERADE and CBS sports. Make sure and check out the Southern Miss page on the CBS intramural website for end of the seasons video and pictures. Once again Congrats!

Best Ref in the game

I’m here at the Tuesday night intramurals, and I think I can safely say the best ref in the league is here calling this game. Not only is he sporting a fu man chu with stylish Wolverine sideburns, but he also the man, the myth, the legend, Devon Ginty. This kid drains 3s like no other on the USD basketball team, and here he is calling a game that is 2-0, 10 minutes in. His one call of the game was made with such style and grace though, he has to be the best ref in the league.
