The 2009 POWERADE College Intramurals Flag Football season is right around the corner. Within the next few weeks, teams will be taking to the fields with hopes of being crowned Intramural Champions. Those coveted t-shirts await!

So what can we look forward to this season? Here’s a few BOLD predictions:

- After starting the season 3-0, several defending champion teams will take a black Sharpie to their 2008 championship t-shirts and insert “2009.” Repeat anyone?

- At least once per night of intramurals, on every campus across the country, a captain will use the famous Jim Mora speech to express his/her frustration with their team. PLAYoffs?!

- One team at UGA will take their rivalry with the University of Florida a little too far when they name their team the “Florida Gators” and then purposely lose every game throughout the season.

- Brett Favre will register for a class at the University of Minnesota so he can win an intramural championship for his daughter (:52 second mark). He will then throw 7 interceptions.

- Seventy-two teams will use their team name as a dedication to Michael Jackson.

- Eighty-eight teams will wish they had chosen a different team name by season’s end.

- After starting the year 0-5, and being shutout in three of five games this year, “The All Star Studs” will hold a press conference officially announcing that they “were not trying their hardest” and “didn’t want to make other teams feel bad by running up the score on them.” Zero people will attend the conference.

- A referee will throw a flag so high in the air that it does not hit the ground until the 2010 Flag Football season begins.

- Someone will try this trick play (make sure someone is getting it on tape!).

- It will be an unforgettable season.

The intramural flag football season is right around the corner.  Keep checking back for updates!

The Intramural basketball season at Illinois State University was in shock this weekend as the Redbirds continued their losing ways against conference opponents. After a disappointing showing on ESPN2 Friday night, the Redbirds were still poised to take the first or second spot coming into a must win MVC tournament. The Redbirds next two games were against the Northern Iowa and Creighton, who both sit at #2 and #1 respectively in the MVC. So the Redbirds were set, and LOST to the Panthers at HOME in DOUBLE OVERTIME. Sounded like the perfect catalyst to a Disney Movie. The Redbirds would beat the #2 team the Panthers, and then the #1 team Creighton, and then securing the top or second spot in the MVC. However, it was not to be, and those who missed the intramural games that night were severely disappointed. Nevertheless, those of us who were there got to enjoy free POWERade!

It is week 3 ladies and gentleman, and you know the competition is heating up in the Greek League. What’s better than a bitter-sweet rivalry that always proves to be one of the best games of the season? Its that time of the year for the Knights of Sigma Nu to face off against the Knights of Omega Delta Phi in what is sure to be a thriller. The game will take place @7 p.m this Wednesday on the second floor of the Student Recreation Center.

Both teams are off to a 2-0 start and hope to continue their win streaks. With Sigma Nu being the current champs of IM basketball and Omega Delta Phi being the current champs of IM football, the intensity is sure to be felt by everyone. Come out and cheer for your pick while we pass out some POWERade gear and towels. If you cant stand the heat, come cool off with some POWERade.

A new season of intramural basketball kicks off at the University of Delaware on Monday, February 23rd.  The courts are ready, the shattered backboard at the Little Bob has been replaced and the athletes are ready after a grueling winter session full of windsprints and weight room sessions.

Luckily POWERade is back for another season as well.  Look for us this Monday at the Little Bob, giving out free POWERade and towels!

One of the highlights for me is seeing the team names at the start of every season.  Theres always a few really funny or creative ones that stand out.  Here are some of the best from this year’s crop:

With the second week underway, Sigma Nu has already reasserted themselve as the team to beat. As the defending Greek Champions, the Knights have a lot of pressure on their shoulders, but have responded with two decisive victories of 10 points or more.

Next week Sigma Nu faces off against Omega Delta Phi, the current Greek Intramural Flag-Football Champions, at 7p.m. on Wednesday at the Rec. Lets see if their skill can carry over onto the Basketball courts.

Also, find us this Sunday night at the Rec passing out FREE POWERade and POWERade gear. GAME ON!!!

The season has just begun here at Texas State University-San Marcos, and the competition is already getting insane. We have an all new Recreation center with several new courts and many more new amenities. Come on out and see what Texas State Intramurals are all about.

We will be having our first event at 6 p.m. on Sunday, February 15 at the rec. We will be handing out free POWERade gear and drinks as well as taking e-mail addresses for contests, prizes, and future updates. We will see you there.

Illinois State University has recently tipped off its intramural basketball season on Monday, and things were quite bland because of the new rule on dunking. The new rule imposed by the intramural department does not allow any players to dunk under any circumstances. This new rule was implemented because of the over-enthusiasm shown by many of the players that would hang on the rim and try to gloat to other teams in that way. However, with the addition of a co-ed league and many shorter people, the dunking problem isn’t actually affecting too many people because most cannot reach the rim anyway. Either way, the new policy allows players to take a longer break during halftime in order to refresh themselves with their favorite POWERade.

Tonight I was lucky enough to sit down with Beth Reedy from UC Davis. Beth is a senior and part of the Kappa Alpha Theta – Zeta Nu Chapter sorority. In the fall of 2007, Theta won the Sorority Flag Football Championship. Way to go!

Aside from her love of intramural sports, Beth has been very involved in her sorority, holding three seperate officer positions. Just this month, she was nominated for Greek Woman of the Year. I chatted with her about her intramural experience. Check out what this intramural veteran had to say (JD-That’s me! BR-Beth Reedy).

JD: Hi Beth, thanks for agreeing to this interview.
BR: It’s my pleasure.
JD: Can you tell me a little about yourself? Where you’re from, what school you go to, what you’re studying, what sorority you’re in… stuff like that?
BR: Sure. I’m a fourth year at UC Davis and I will be graduating this spring. I’m studying communications and psychology and I’m a member of Kappa Alpha Theta.
JD: I understand you play a large variety of intramural sports? Tell me a little about that.
BR: I typically play on 6 teams a quarter in both co-ed and women’s leagues. I also do all of the 24-hour tournaments which are offered each quarter. Usually, I only play 3 sports on two different teams per sport.
JD: Wow, that sounds like a large commitment. Is one of those teams made up of friends and the other your sorority sisters?
BR: In the fall the sororities have their own flag football league. It’s a big deal for each of the houses to have their own team and compete against each other. That is the only team that is made up of strictly my sorority, but I play on a lot of teams that my sisters or other Greeks are on as well.
JD: So aside from flag football, do you ever compete against your sisters? Are they ever on opposing teams? What is that like?
BR: Inevitably you do run into that situation. I’ve actually played a championship game against some of my housemates. Its all in good fun, and we usually tease each other or whatnot. There is always a sense of friendship on and off the field of play. Its fun to see them out there.
JD: Enough about the past, lets take a look forward. The intramural basketball season has just started. How does your team look this semester? What’s your team name?
BR: I’m playing on a team called AIA Oldies, which I’ve been with for several years. We had our first game last Sunday and looked solid, so we are really looking forward to this season.
JD: Great! Well best luck throughout the season. Any advice for the intramural basketball newbies?
BR: Have fun with it! IMs are all about having a good time and playing a game that you love.
